Court-Martialed Medal of Honor Recipient Honored in California

February 2, 2009

Colonel Lewis L. Millett left high school during his junior year to fight fascism. Upset with America’s stance on isolationism, he deserted the American Army, hopped the Canadian border and joined theirs. After manning an antiaircraft gun during the Blitz, he rejoined the American Army that had started arriving in England. Col. Millett then served in Africa where he earned a Silver Star. Later in Anzio, his record caught up with him. He was court-martialed, charged with desertion and fined $52. The same day he was promoted to lieutenant.

Col. Millett later earned the Medal of Honor for actions that he took on February 7, 1951 in Korea. On the anniversary of his actions, a park will be dedicated in his honor at San Jacinto. Read more about Col. Millett.
