Elementary Students Welcome Iraq Veteran Home

For the past year students at St Isaac Jogues Elementary School in St Clair Shores, IA have been corresponding with Army Specialist Alex Knapp as he recovered in Walter Reed Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. SPC Knapp lost both of his legs in an explosion while he was patrolling outside Baghdad in March 2008. Student Ariani Castillo realized that “This man, he risked his life to save us. The best thing I could say to him was ‘Thank you,’” While in Washington, SPC Knapp’s hospital room walls were covered with cards and letters. At the welcome home ceremony the students gave him over 300 more messages in binders. Read more.
