Merchant Marine Veteran of Normandy Passes Away

Captain Frank Hayden passed away on February 8, 2009. Captain Hayden served aboard the S.S. William N. Pendleton during the invasion of Normandy. The ship was hit by a 100-pound German bomb only a few feet from where Captain Hayden was standing at the time. Miraculously, the bomb was stripped of its detonator by the ship’s mast and did not explode.

Captain Hayden was a friend of the American Veterans Center. He shared his story at the 2003 conference. He was also a recipient of the AVC’s 2003 Douglas Munro Auxiliary Services Award. His story was also published in 2003 Spring issue of World War II Chronicles (page 8-9).
