Medal of Honor Recipient Michael J. Crescenz Honored

Over 40 years after his death in Vietnam, Corporal Michael J. Crescenz is being honored by his hometown. A mural at the Toms River American Legion was unveiled this week. The mural was painted by two local high school students Lauren Marion and Armando Ramirez. The mural depicts the all the medals Crescenz earned during his career with an American flag as a backdrop.

Corporal Crescenz earned the Medal of Honor on November 20, 1968 in a firefight in Vietnam. He is credited with single-handedly silencing the enemy in three bunkers while under heavy machinegun fire. He was mortally wounded while attempting to silence the guns in a fourth bunker. His actions allowed his company that had been pinned down to accomplish the remainder of its mission with minimal danger.

Read the article about the mural’s unveiling or visit the Army’s website and read Corporal Crescenz’s Medal of Honor citation.
