Last British Vet to Have Seen Active Duty in Both World Wars Dies

A veteran of the Royal Navy William Stone passed away on January 10 at age 108. Mr. Stone is the last remaining British veteran who saw action in both world wars. He joined the Navy on his 18th birthday in 1918. During this time, he served as a stoker on the HMS Tiger, HMS Hood and HMS Salamander and took part in the evacuation of Dunkirk. He was the recipient of the British War Medal, the Atlantic Star, the Africa Star and the 1939-1945 War Medal – decorated with an oak leaf for “Mentioned in Dispatches”
