Designer of 50-Star U.S. Flag Honors Frank Buckles

Frank Buckles, the last surviving World War I vet, has been given hundreds of flags; but he is currently without a flagpole. When Michigan resident Bob Heft who designed the 50-star U.S. flag as a 17-year-old high school student heard about the situation, he decided to rectify it.

Mr. Heft accompanied a small group of veterans from Indiana and Michigan on trip to Mr. Buckles farm in West Virginia this week to erect a flagpole for him. The pole will be dedicated on Saturday as a birthday present for Mr. Buckles, who turns 108 on Sunday.
