Thousands Watch Reenactment of Leningrad Siege

A snowy field outside of St. Petersburg turned black with gunpowder and smoke last Sunday during a reenactment of the offensive of Marshal Georgy Zhukov on January 27, 1944. About 4,000 people attended the event including survivors of the real siege.

Survivor Valentina Sysoyeva recalled pulling a sled with her sister’s corpse to a mass grave. Alexander Kruzhkov remembered cutting a tiny piece of bread into several pieces for his brothers after his parents had already died of starvation.

The re-enactment was organized by St. Petersburg’s Epoch, which holds several events and battle re-enactments. Read more on this topic.
