Quote of the Day

“We wear the Medal for all the brave men and women that we serve with, and we are the caretaker of the Medal for them. It is a very humbling experience to wear and receive the Medal. I am very humbled to be a small part of a very elite group. There are only 99 living recipients: 3,400 or so from the Civil War to the present. It is just a very humbling experience for me.”

-Colonel Walter Joseph Marm, recipient of our nation’s highest award for valor in combat the Medal of Honor, in response to a question regarding what the Medal of Honor meant to him at the 2008 American Veterans Center Conference.

Col. Marm has shared his story at the AVC’s 2007 and 2008 conferences. He served as a second lieutenant in the Battle of Ia Drang under then-Lt. Colonel Hal Moore.

Col. Marm received the American Veterans Center’s 2008 Joe Ronnie Hooper Award for his valor in Vietnam. Here he is pictured receiving the award from James Roberts, president of AVC.
